Faculty Research

The University of California Transportation Center funds faculty research on surface transportation topics relevant to the Center’s theme, "Transportation Systems Analysis and Policy." Any faculty member in the University of California system may apply for a research grant, except UC Davis faculty, who now have their own center.

May 2009: New guidelines

  • One application per PI.
  • Faculty Proposals for the 2010-2011 academic year MUST BE EMAILED to proposals "at" uctc dot net by the end of day on March 1, 2010.
  • $100,000 is the upper limit.
  • Proposals are evaluated by a single blind review.
  • For every two faculty research grants, an article in ACCESS or similar professional publication must be completed.
  • For each faculty grant, the PI will be required to assist with writing a 2-page policy brief at the grant’s conclusion.
  • There should be significant faculty involvement and participation in grants. If a proposal is largely for a doctoral student’s dissertation research, then the student will be encouraged to seek a dissertation grant.
  • Longer-term research can be funded by applying for follow-on grants; however, each annual grant must produce a useful product.

The Request for Proposals (RFP) provides information on proposal content and grant requirements. The RFP is available in Word and PDF formats. IMPORTANT NOTE: Faculty must download the full budget spreadsheet here, and the summary budget spreadsheet here. Budgets must be submitted using this format.

Faculty members seeking funding for dissertation students should also refer to the Dissertation Grants page. We strongly encourage students to submit a proposal for a dissertation grant in their final year
